So, LayGuy tagged me for this book list, so I’m up:

trilogy.jpg1. One book that changed your life:

Well, it’s not really one, but three. The Circle Trilogy by Ted Dekker gave a whole new feeling and image to the Gospel for me. Not only was the story moving and engrossing, but it seemed like every 50 pages there was a theological epiphany. Not anything new, just a new way of seeing it and thinking about it. My wife and I loved the story so much that we named our son after the protagonist. So, if later in life I end up changing my mind about the rest, the name will still be there. :)

I don’t think I can say enough about this one. The fervor with which the protagonist resisted Sam I Am’s green treat illustrates how even the most hostile person can be changed when they get the true flavor of the Gospel. Ok, I just made that up, but it works; and I have read this about 15 times in the last month and a half. I think I may like it more than my son…

3. One book you’d want on a desert island:

This one is sort of a no-brainer, so I’ll make it a little tougher for you to translate…

calvin1.jpg4. Two books that made you laugh:

I don’t think I’ve ever not laughed at Bill Watterson’s six-year-old protagonist. A good chunk of my youth was filtered through the pages of The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes, as well as The Essential Calvin and Hobbes, from age 11-13. I believe I started to plan a campaign to oust my dad from office, started to wish I had an imaginary friend that was as good as Hobbes. And to this day I mess up the pledge of allegiance: “I pledge allegiance to Queen Fragg, and her mighty state of hysteria…”

5. One book that made you cry:

The only legitimate answer I can give is the two above…and the tears were from laughter. Maybe there’s something wrong with me, or my tear ducts, but I’ve never cried because of a book.

6. One book you wish had been written:

The Complete Guide to Everything by G-D.

7. One book you wish had never been written:

thwacker.jpgThe Shroud of the Thwacker, by Chris Elliot. I vaguely remembered Chris from “Get A Life” and SNL, so I decided to give the book a shot. What I had forgotten is that I was 9 when I thought he was funny. No doubt I would have continued to find him funny…if I were still 9. I am not. I think I stopped reading shortly after the hero went to the Hellmann’s stand for a cup of mayo (see, they ate it straight, because no one had figured out what to do with it yet). If you find that entertaining, then I’m sure there’s plenty of fodder for you.

cross-of-christ.jpg8. One book you’re currently reading:

While the list of things I’m currently reading keeps growing (The Bourne Supremacy, Finding God at Harvard, God in the Flesh), the most exciting one on my plate is John Stott’s The Cross of Christ. I’d heard of it, but hadn’t ever been inclined to pick it up, but I saw it at Border’s last week and decided to leave Dinesh D’Souza’s latest on the shelf. One of the reason’s I’m excited is because this is a book that managed to get side-by-side blurbs on the dustjacket from Tony Jones and D. A. Carson. Chew on that one for a minute…

screwtape.jpg 9. One book you’ve been meaning to read:

C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters; I’ve started this, but keep getting interrupted with new stuff. So this is the one that will follow the extremely small print of the above.

Okay, so now I’m supposed to tag 5 people. Unfortunately I don’t really have a blogger network, with the exception of Jason, Ryan, and Wade. So I’ll go for some who I don’t really know…uh, Adam and Chris. Have at it.
