“Segregating people on the basis of health…”

One of the great things about the health summit was getting to witness certain members’ rhetorical skills and getting to hear how they think about things.  One of the most revealing comments was made by Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), who lamented that people whose medical bills are higher have to pay more, as this constitutes “segregating people on the basis of health.”  He added, “It’s time to stop that kind of segregation in our country.”

Surely we can all unite in opposition to the injustice that Sen. Harkin so mercifully highlights.  I mean, what’s next?  People whose housing bills are higher could have to pay more, which would segregate them on the basis of how nice their house is (although they’d still get to live in the same neighborhood).  People whose food bills are higher could have to pay more, which would segregate them on the basis of their appetite.

In all seriousness, Harkin’s remarks say a lot about the liberal mindset.  Having people pay their own way is apparently an injustice akin to segregating them by race or creed.  Well, as Harry Reid said to Lamar Alexander, “You’re entitled to your opinions….”

3 Things + 1: Simple, Blind, Deaf, and Dumb

1. Simple

I do not, will not, cannot understand the magnitude and absolute nature of the attributes of God, the finality of his judgment, the totality of his love for me, or the sacrifice necessary to follow him.

2. Blind

I rarely, if ever, notice the blessings, gifts, warnings, or sign posts he daily places before me, before it’s far too late.

3. Deaf

I do not hear the clear calling of Jesus to wear my faith on my sleeve day to day, in my work, my marriage, and my every moment.

+ 1. Dumb

I do not share the truth, nor encourage my brothers and sisters daily. I do not praise or honor God enough.

My prayer is that these things do not remain true beyond tonight.

Stupid.

Yes, that is my hand. Yes, my cast is pink and blue. Yes, I did design this with three fingers on my mouse hand.  As Ali G. would say, “Respeck.”

Get the story here, and the followup here.

Oh, I forgot! Yes, I can still hold a controller.

Rule #5: Don’t Do Dumb Stuff

Rule number 5 is as simple as they come. You know that time it snowed and you thought it would be fun to try to drift rally-style on the ice? Yeah, that was dumb. You shouldn’t have done it. Oh, and remember when you thought it was cool to touch your tongue to a 9-volt, so you decided to try an exposed extension cord? Again, dumb.

This doesn’t even require you to do smart things. All it requires is that you not try to catch a tiger by his toe. If only it were so simple.

I, like many others (if we’ll admit it) find myself doing dumb stuff all the time. Once recently I referred to a girl I work with as “gigantic”. I meant to acknowledge her height (she’s 6-foot) in a playful manner. She didn’t see it that way.

There are simple reasons for not doing dumb stuff.

  • You’ll seem smarter.
  • You’ll feel smarter.
  • You’ll have less to apologize for.
  • You’ll spend less on band-aids and Neosporin.
  • The card in your wife’s bouquet can start with, “I love you,” instead of, “I didn’t mean to…”
  • And, of course, many more…

If those aren’t enough, try this: “The wealth of the wise is their crown, but the folly of fools yields folly.” ((Proverbs 14:24, NIV)) There you have it, doing dumb stuff leads to more dumb stuff, which leads away from the aforementioned benefits of not doing dumb stuff. Just say, “No!” to stupidity.
