Women have a right to drink. We have a right to drink as much as we want and we have a right to drink as much as we want without being raped. But just as we warn each other that certain neighborhoods are safer in daylight than others, why is it that some feminist activists have a tough time warning other women that women who drink — but not to the point of being intoxicated — will in fact be safer from a variety of crimes, including being mugged, than women who drink to extremes? Why is saying that out loud without fear of retribution not an option for any of us who identify as feminists, or anyone else who doesn’t want to be vilified? I’m not advocating that we become a society who never drinks. But we should work towards being a society where people — of both genders — are both encouraged and educated to drink responsibly.

Keli Goff: Why Are Feminists Afraid to Admit the Connection Between Alcohol and Rape?

This might be the first time I’ve ever agreed with Keli Goff.

Bieber’s no genius…but abortion’s still “like killing a baby.”

I’ll never understand the line of argument implied when someone responds to a pro-lifer, “What about rape or incest?” This is like saying, “It’s not wrong to stab people…what about rape or incest?”

Would anyone be so logically deficient as to conclude that it’s okay to stab people any time you choose, because we don’t want to restrict access to stabbing, incase someone is being raped? I feel safe in saying no. This is a silly, illogical, and frankly moronic approach that is beneath the intellectual abilities of my friends who have used it.

  1. It’s beside the point - It has nothing to do with the desire for open access to abortion, aka “abortion on demand.”
  2. Almost no abortions are the result of rape or incest - I’ve seen numbers reporting 0.1-1% of abortions are the result of rape. That means that at least 99% of abortions are the result of consensual sex. Women who did the deed, then decided the consequences would be inconvenient.
  3. Whose callous here? Is it more inconsiderate to (a) ask a few thousand victimized women to protect the rights of the child - their child - growing inside them, or (b) allow over a million women to kill a growing and defenseless human being, because they don’t want their lives to change. Both choices suck, but it’s pretty clear which one sucks more.

I don’t care if the fetus has awareness, or can feel pain. It’s alive. It’s alive and it is not part of its mother’s body. It’s not a goiter or a mole or a tumor. We’re talking about a person. And that person deserves the same respect and dignity as any other.

It’s amazing to me that we can place a child’s worth so fully in the hands of its mother. Are you really willing to say that if a mom doesn’t want her child, she’s allowed to kill it? That’s a dangerous road.
